On a resent business trip to Las Vegas, I visited Lovell Canyon after reports of multiple Lewis's Woodpecker*, Juniper Titmouse*, Pygmy Nuthatch and Townsend's Solitaire* (all new birds for me) were posted on the Nevada Birds Mailing List. I left my hotel at 5:00am and got to Lovell Canyon at around 6:15am.

First birds of the day were a hand full of Western Bluebirds followed by an inquisitive Bewick’s Wren. Not much else was seen on the way to the Trailhead but when I got there all that changed. There were many birds actively feeding and making a lot of noise. Western Scrub-Jays were the noisiest and they seemed to follow me throughout my stay there. Within the first 15 minutes I got to photograph a Lewis’s Woodpecker* which was my target bird. I then shifted my attention to smaller birds in hopes of getting a Pigmy Nuthatch and a Juniper Titmouse. I saw a number of White and Red-breasted Nuthatches but I had no luck with Pigmy. Juniper Titmice* were easier to find as I had a number of them come through the area while I was there. Townsend's Solitaire* were also fairly easy to photograph as well as Bushtits and Dark-eyed Juncos. A fly by Golden Eagle towards the end of my stay at Lovell Canyon was a welcome sight.
